VSAT Case Study

Need: Remote Connectivity (Data/Voice) in Banda Aceh and Jakarta, Indonesia on behalf of USAID and a major US based engineering company.

Challenge: The US based engineering company was tasked to redesign the only major road and its bridges that provide a supply and trade route from Banda Aceh to Meulaboh that was destroyed by the Tsunami in December 2004. They needed a proven method of communication to enable voice and data connectivity from remote regions within Indonesia. Treadstone Consulting delivered a turn key solution - VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) - for remote connectivity between Banda Aceh and Jakarta, Indonesia and their corporate offices in the United States.

Solution: We carefully examined the following items:

  • Mission critical applications that in country staff would be using
  • Number of users on the remote network
  • VoIP needs
  • Geographical locations of each site

In a situation where other connectivity options are not feasible, VSAT offers two distant advantages: less deployment time and easy manageability. A VSAT is a small fixed earth station which provides a communication link required to setup a satellite-based communication network. It represents a cost-effective solution for those who want an independent communications network to connect any number of geographically dispersed sites, especially sites where any other connectivity options are not possible to implement.

Result: The VSAT turn key solution was highly successfully. The VSAT deployment was completely designed, procured, installed and tested for production on-time and under budget. The engineering company was able to efficiently and effectively use ERP applications and VoIP communications over their network from Banda Aceh and Jakarta, Indonesia.

Enterprise Wireless Network

Need: A secure wireless infrastructure in the Administration building for the City of Houston Airport System and the “Disaster Room” in a Terminal.

Challenge:The scope of the wireless network by airport personnel and disaster recovery teams was immense. It would have to provide service to employees in the administration building as well as large numbers of disaster team members in the time of a crisis. The focus was on three main requirements:

  • Centralized security and management
  • Fast and easy scalability
  • Affordability, in terms of total cost of ownership and value

Requirement:

  • Centralized RF Management and troubleshooting
  • Simple partitioning of the WLAN
  • Plug and play installation and automatic configuration
  • Secure authentication and access controls

Benefits: After considering all the issues and requirements the system chosen was a centralized WLAN switching and security system. By using this system they were able to centralize all security and RF controls, have the most advanced wireless security available today and required less equipment and configuration time than alternative solutions. The centralized wireless system delivered lowered the cost of ownership and simplified management. It also allowed administrators to provide remote troubleshooting and an integrated firewall enabled differentiated user access.
